In 1140 there was a Vallombrosan monastery
It was an interesting building built in the first decades of the twelfth century, with an older central core built several centuries earlier.
Elegant and understated, the imposing structure of the apse is situated at the limits of a thick forest. It was already mentioned in 1140 as a Vallombrosan monastery. The primitive representations on the pillars of the cloister and the residual traces of numerous frescoes that decorated the interior of the church are striking. On the beautiful sandstone portal of the fourteenth century, which leads to the abbey, stands the coat of arms of Matteo Frescobaldi, then abbot of the monastery. In the sacristy, there is a Florentine school fresco depicting a lady on throne. To visit the church contact the rectory (tel. 0571.910118) on Sunday from 8.45 am to 13 and from 15 to 19.
Directions. Starting from Artimino take the road to Carmignano
(Via Arrendevole). Halfway up on the left, after a group of houses, there is the church.
